Springtime in Steakland

This weekend, the sun teased us where we live and gave us some gorgeous, spring-like weather.

Here’s what we chose to do with it. . .

Uh, huh. We grilled out. It turned into this. . .

And soon after, the weather yelled, “Psyche! Just kidding!” Then it turned back into nasty winter.

I’m SO glad we took advantage of it when we had the chance. I just hate sending my hubby out to grill in the snow. I’ll do it, but I just hate it. 😉

Here’s to more springy weather. It puts me in a fabulous mood – and keeps me well fed!

Steak Fun Facts

If you’re here, you probably love a great steak.

But here are a few fun tidbits you might not know about our beloved beef. Read on!

History

  • Although meat has been grilled since shortly after the discovery of fire–some 500,000 years ago–it did not become a popular pastime until the 1950s.
  • Time Frame

  • Depending on the cut of the steak, it may take between 10 and 30 minutes to cook on the grill; thicker cuts, such as filet mignon and T-bone, generally take the most time to grill.
  • Benefits

  • Grilling is an exceptionally healthy method of cooking steak and other kinds of meat because excess fat drains away rather than being consumed.
  • Fun Fact

  • The charcoal briquette was invented in 1920 by Henry Ford, with help from Thomas Edison.
  • Warning

  • Most injuries related to grilling are caused by improper use of starter fluid, such as adding additional fluid after lighting an outdoor grill.
  • Considerations

  • If you want to produce “grill marks” when making steak, avoid moving the steak except to turn it–only once–during the course of cooking.

    Christmas Steaks…Military Style

DesertWolf1979 shot this video of our amazing military preparing steaks on Christmas Day. If anybody deserves steak on Christmas Day it’s these guys!

    Here’s his description:

This of course was taken on Christmas day. Our command decided that they were going to give us a nice dinner and grilled about 500 pounds of steak and took about 6 hours to cook them all on 5 grills.

Well, God bless these guys and God bless America!
